New Electrolysis Project brought into Spanish Market by Sunfire

Basque Hydrogen will receive a 10 megawatt electrolyser from Sunfire at the port of Bilbao. Repsol plans to power a nearby e-fuel plant with green hydrogen produced from the plant and operation is expected to commence in 2026.

Basque Hydrogen is a consortium led by Petronor, a subsidiary of Repsol, which is the leading hydrogen producer and consumer within Spain.

Sunfire’s pressurized alkaline technology being selected for this project emphasises the company’s position as the established preferred partner for globally operating energy companies.

Electricity from renewable sources allows 200 kg of green hydrogen to be produced by the plant hourly, which will go into Repsol’s production of synthetic fuels.

Conducting a project in Bilbao expands Sunfire’s portfolio, re-emphasises their commitment to decarbonisation, and takes the company a step closer to achieving their zero net emissions by 2050 target.

Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire, commented “Sunfire is an established partner for the realization of green hydrogen projects and plays a key role in the decarbonization of the industry. We are excited to have gained with Repsol another global energy company as partner.”

Aldag added, “Spain is a very exciting market for us! The country offers strong conditions for green hydrogen projects with its geographic location and industrial expertise.”

Maribel Rodriguez Olmo, Hydrogen Director of Repsol, comments: “At Repsol, we are committed to forming the best alliances, such as with Sunfire, to attract part of the hydrogen value chain to Spain, not only as a production hub but also to boost industry and industrial employment in the country.”

Rodriguez Olmo, continued “Repsol has one of the most consolidated renewable hydrogen strategies in Europe and has renewable hydrogen as one of its main transformation lines to achieve its goal of being a zero net emissions company by 2050.”
