Real-Time Analysis of CO2 Purity for Quality Assurance in Carbon Capture and Storage Using FTIR Spectrometry

26 Jun 2025
Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a pivotal technology in achieving net-zero emissions. This presentation discusses the importance of monitoring impurities such as sulfonated compounds, oxides of nitrogen, oxygen, and water to ensure pipeline integrity, safety, and compliance with environmental regulations. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy provides precise, online analysis of CO2 purity and impurity profiles in CCS pipelines. Results from laboratory studies demonstrate FTIR’s exceptional performance in detecting impurities at low levels, maintaining stable calibrations, and providing actionable insights for process optimization. The results validate FTIR as a solution to addressing challenges in CCS monitoring as global investments in hard-to-abate sectors continue to rise.
