Full scale CCS with NGCC Gas Turbine Power Plants: Operational Considerations
By looking at the latest new projects being built, we will examine methods for improving operations and decreasing total project cost. Gas turbines use EGR to modify the combustion process resulting in higher levels of CO2 in the exhaust stream and lower levels of O2 while simultaneously reducing total exhaust flow to the carbon capture system. Due to these exhaust changes the carbon capture system absorber towers size is reduced significantly, with improved performance, decreased operational costs, and increased CO2 capture. The NGCC will also see improved part load efficiency and increased total power. Each of these impacts was explored in detail by GE Vernova in the recent DOE funded FEED study for the Southern Company Plant Barry site. In addition, GE is part of the consortium at the UK's Netzero Teesside project. GE has collaborated with multiple vendors, carbon capture OEMs and EPCs to develop EGR solutions for NGCC with carbon capture.
