Biogenic CO2 emissions removal with point source carbon capture technologies

25 Jun 2025
Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage

Biogenic CO2 emissions are originated as a result of the combustion of organic materials such as wood or other types of biomass. When biogenic CO2 emissions are captured and permanently stored, carbon credits can be generated and traded in carbon markets, which have attracted carbon credit sales agreements with global software developers, hyperscalers and data centers. The pulp and paper industry are predominately a biomass-based sector and has a large share of biogenic CO2 emissions, which occur during the pulping process. Capturing CO2 from pulp mills and permanently storing the biogenic CO2 emissions could also offer high value carbon credits.
The biogenic CO2 emissions from a typical chemical pulp processes are driven by process chemistry in the recovery boiler. About two-thirds of the CO2 emissions (all biogenic) are generated from combustion of “black liquor” in the recovery boiler. The power boilers, typically combusting barks and wood residues, account for about 20% of the CO2 emissions, and the remaining CO2 emissions are generated by lime kilns. Depending on the fuel mix used to accommodate the calcination process, lime kilns could also be a source of biogenic CO2 emissions.  Carbon capture is an essential component for removing biogenic CO2 emissions from pulp mills, therefore, it has a significant potential to contribute to reaching regional and national climate targets.  Onsite CO2 utilization technologies for specific application to the pulp industry are still under development. This presentation identifies challenges and opportunities with implementing carbon capture in pulp and paper industry as well as provides design considerations targeting the implementation barriers compared to other applications of carbon capture in refineries, chemical facilities, and power plants.
