Marine Ammonia Fuel: A Carbon-Free Power Roadmap
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), which governs the regulations of international shipping, adopted a goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 at MEPC 80 in July 2023. This presentation will discuss the comparison of marine alternative fuel candidates to replace existing heavy fuel oil from the perspective of a shipyard and a shipbuilding system integrator, as well as the roadmap and challenges for social implementation.
Marine ammonia fuel is emerging as the potential next-generation fuel following heavy oil and LNG. We have developed a system to enable the supply of ammonia fuel to onboard marine diesel engines, boilers, and GCUs, with plans to deliver the first unit by 2025.
Additionally, ongoing collaborations allow us to explore carbon-free marine power generation systems that combine ammonia cracking units with hydrogen fuel cells or hydrogen-fueled engines.
